This week I helped my group refine our game into something a little more concrete. The topics we discussed while in class really helped me to imagine what our game would be like to play, and I really like our idea. I think we put an interesting twist to the “cops and robbers” style game. I think objects is the term that stands out the most to me from the chapter. In the book Macklin says “The actions and rules of a game make more sense when we know the game’s goal.” I think this resonates with our game and its uniqueness because once the player realizes the objective it becomes clear that they can’t be caught or waste time trying to find the items. What I like about our game is that the objects the seekers must retrieve makes it different from other games. Which is why I think goals are another one of the six basic elements of games that our game is about. I have some good ideas for class on Tuesday that could push that idea of restrictions on goals even further, such as possibly needing both members of a team to deposit an item. Another idea I came up with is to possibly maker everyone walk. Not allowing people to run could make the game a little more tense and can provide an anxiety factor for the seekers. The type of play I want people to experience here is cooperative play and competitive play at the same time with our game because Macklin says in the book that “While games are systems from the vantage point of systems thinking, they are also works created to express, convey, and provide experiences.” I resonate with this quote because I feel like our game could be fun to play and get to experience those feelings that it may invoke.
