Rick Garfield's Magic: The Gathering is a game that has stood the test of time for many reasons. Although I have never been able to keep up with the competitive scene myself I love to watch others play the game and the one thing that magic does right to an extent is simplicity. After watching a game or 2 of magic, it is easy for the player to hop in and pilot a deck. This is because magic is played with simple sets and decks that can be taken to the next level of complexity with advanced cards. For our card game design we wanted to focus on the simplicity of matching sets and card draw anxiety as well as being able
To use your cards on other players. In our haunted house themed game we drew heavy influence from exploding kittens. However, unlike exploding kittens the objective of our game is to get out of the game as soon as possible rather than to stay in for as long as possible like in exploding kittens. We will use cards like skips and other interactable cards to facilitate the fun rather than making it feel like a single player game. In his design notes, Garfield explained the magics “quick-to-play” game structure was key in not bogging down how he wanted players to feel while keeping strategy in mind and on the table. This is another aspect we want to take away from magic the gathering. Players have their hands and the deck, the rest is mind games and baiting your opponents to play cards at inopportune times, making it easier to seal a win for yourself this draws inspiration from both exploding kittens and Magic: The Gathering.
