For my Dr. Animate sport, I chose Capoeira because I am interested in combat sports, and I was very surprised to find out that it is more like a dance than a fight. While Capoeira is considered a fight, the goal of the game is to show off your superior skills rather than to knock the opponent out like in traditional MMA. The fight is done to the beat of a drum and other instruments and players are supposed to keep their bodies moving the whole time, just like a dance. However, the dance can send you to the hospital, Capoeira isn’t about the nitty gritty fighting like wrestling or even boxing in some cases. Capoeira wants the fighters to throw amazing kicks and show off their impressive movement to get massive shots if possible. It is allowed to hit people in capoeira, but the hits should be very difficult to do so the opponent has time to dodge. The Brazilian do capoeira basically as an art show with the small possibility of seeing someone get knocked out in the coolest way possible, which if you’re a combat sports guy like me will be right up your alley.

When I was reading kinds of play tonight, I felt like almost all of the “kinds of play” are in tabletop Dungeons and Dragons. Obviously, Cooperative play is a major part of any Dungeons and Dragons campaign and working together is on of the key cogs in the game that make it fun. Dungeons and Dragons also includes Experience based play, Experience based play is defined by Macklin and Sharp as “A kind of play focused on providing players with an experience of the game through exploration, unfolding a story, or communal engagement.” (Chapter 3). Dungeons and Dragons is a perfect example of this because players forge their own stories and timelines and can even incorporate Whimsical play because of this, using silly tactics and outrageous skill rolls after some negotiation with your dungeon master. I think the way that all of these kinds of play can be seen in a game like this speaks volumes about the reason its popular. Dungeons and Dragons has been around for a while, and with stylistic weapons it has I don’t see it going away any time soon.
